Jack Wood

John “Jack” Wood, 82, of Blackfoot, formerly of Hamer, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012 from natural causes at The Willows Retirement Community in Blackfoot. He was under the care of Creekside Home Health and Hospice. Jack was born August 7, 1929 in Idaho Falls to Vaughn Milo Wood and Wanda Nadine Reading Wood. He attended school in York, and Barton Flat (near Mackay) and in Idaho Falls. On January 15, 1955 he married Margaret Garnet Nielsen in Idaho Falls. Together they raised five children. Jack worked as a farmer, rancher, and trucker. He started driving truck at a young age. He primarily worked in the livestock business for Floyd Skelton, Ray Skelton, and Ross McCowin. Jack and his family moved to Twin Falls in 1957 and he bought his own cattle truck in 1958. In 1960, Jack and Margaret opened Trails End Western Wear in Idaho Falls. In 1963, the family moved to Billings, Montana, where Jack was foreman at Public Auction Yards. They moved to Hamer in 1966, where they started farming and ranching. In 1972, they purchased the Hamer Store and Bar. Then in 1987, they bought a ranch at the Big Butte, near Arco, where he spent many enjoyable seasons. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jack and Margaret enjoyed traveling, snowmobiling, and being around cattle and horses. He also enjoyed his family time with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Survivors are: Wife: Margaret of Blackfoot, ID; Sons: Vaughn (Cindy) Wood of Blackfoot, ID; Greg (Robin) Wood of Boise, ID; John (Connie) Wood of Blackfoot, ID; Joel (Todd) Wood of Boise, ID; Daughter: Kari (Michael) VanOrden of Blackfoot, ID; 10 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren; and his brother, Port Wood of Ammon, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Nadine Renken and Kay Talbot. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Wood Funeral Home (273 North Ridge Avenue). The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8:3-0 p.m. Tuesday evening and 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services, both visitations at Wood’s. Burial will be in the Grant- Central Cemetery.
