J W Rogers

J W Rogers, 78, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his residence Thursday, June 13, 2013. J W was born December 5, 1934 in Auburn, Kentucky, to Fielding Waller Rogers and Kathleen Bass Rogers. He was always a hard worker from the age of six when he delivered papers in his hometown until high school graduation. He attended Auburn School without missing a day. After graduation in 1952, he attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky and graduated with degrees in Physics and mathematics. While attending college, he worked part-time in the cafeteria and the meat market of Georgetown. Upon graduation he moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he began his life-long career as a nuclear radiation and reactor physicist. J W worked for Union Carbide from 1957-1960. He moved to Idaho Falls in March of 1960 working for Phillips Petroleum Company at what is now the INL. During his career he was published in nuclear journals and reference encyclopedias citing many discoveries from intense experimentation with uranium 235. After 44 years he retired, but remained a consultant until his death. Also among J W’s professional accomplishments were forty years of service with Lockheed & Martin; Completion of EG&G Management Skills development program on June 12, 1980; ASTM Committee E-10 Nuclear Technology & Applications Award of Merit in 1987; ASTM Committee E-10 Nuclear Technology & Applications for Outstanding Service & Dedication as local chair for 6th ASTM-Euration International Symposium on Reactor Dosimetry held at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in June 1987; ASTM Committee E-10 Nuclear Technology & Applications Award of Appreciation for Outstanding Leadership & Service to 8th ASTM-Euvation Symposium on Reactor Dosimetry in Vail, Colorado, September 1993, which was awarded January, 1994. J W married Carrie Maxwell March 5, 1960 at Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. They moved to Idaho Falls and raised their family. J W was a devout Christian, accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of fifteen. He was a member of Auburn Baptist Church as a young man. He has been a member of Calvary Baptist Church here in Idaho Falls since 1960. All who knew him are comforted by their knowledge of his faith and are sure he is fishing with Jesus and the Angels along the shores of the Crystal Sea. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carrie Rogers of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Daughter, Susanna (Robert) Rogers Nelson of Idaho Falls; Daughter Amanda Rogers Larsen of Pocatello, Idaho; Granddaughter, Whittney Christner of Sarasota, Florida; Granddaughter, Breanna Shelton of Russellville, Kentucky; Grandson, Andres Hernandez of Blackfoot, Idaho; Brother, Glenn Bass (Marianne) Rogers of Nashville, Tennessee. No public services will be held.
