Ivy Ka Lan Berry, 66, of Idaho Falls, passed away quietly at home on Sunday, April 15, 2018, under the loving care of her family. Though she is finally free from the pain and struggle of fighting cancer, she will be deeply missed.
Ivy was born September 8, 1951 in Hong Kong to King Yu Yau and Yuk Chun Yeung, who had recently fled from Guangdong, China to avoid the communist takeover. As a young teenager in 1960s Hong Kong, she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Later, she came to the United States in 1970, eventually gaining much-cherished U.S. citizenship.
Ivy attended Tooele High School in Utah for one year. She then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where in February 1973, she won the Miss International BYU competition. On April 19, 1974, she married Ray A. Berry in the Manti Utah LDS Temple, and they moved in 1976 to Idaho Falls where they raised three amazing children.
Ivy voluntarily directed the boys summer baseball program for the City of Ammon for over 15 years, tirelessly overseeing the formation of teams, finding coaches and umpires, and acquiring sponsors.
Ivy was employed for many years by the Post Register in Idaho Falls, where she retired as the Chief Financial Officer.
There was no BYU sports fan more avid than Ivy. She knew the teams and sports so well that she could have coached or officiated…if they’d only asked. She served as Chairperson for the BYU Alumni Association’s Idaho Falls Chapter for 15 years, bringing numerous groups to the stage at the Performing Arts Center and the Civic Auditorium. In this capacity she also raised funds for multiple scholarships for deserving students to continue their college education.
Ivy faithfully served in many capacities within the LDS Church, including Young Women’s President, Ward Relief Society President, and in the Stake Relief Society Presidency at BYUI. She was always most satisfied when she could work directly with young adults.
Ivy’s effervescent personality and the fortitude with which she overcame enormous obstacles in her life were an inspiration and source of encouragement to all those around her. She specifically endeavored to steer the lives of young people by readily sharing genuine friendship along with her unique life experiences.
This devoted and cherished woman is survived by her husband Ray Berry of Idaho Falls, and three children: Jared A. Berry of St. Paul, Minnesota, Kalana B. Penner (David) of La Canada, California, and Capt. Jacob R. Berry (Jakyung) of the U.S. Air Force, and four grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Man Ying Mak and Man Wai Lui both of Hong Kong, and three brothers, Man Chung Yau, Man Dik Yau, and Man Bun Yau all of Taiwan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Ammon Foothill LDS Stake Center, 3934 E. 49th S. Friends may pay their respects and visit with the family on Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and Saturday from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. at the Stake Center.
