Irene Muir Mumford, 97, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, died October 23, 2022 at Morning Star Assisted living of causes incident to age.

She was born March 29, 1925 in Parker, Idaho, to Royal Bassett Muir and Sylvia Eloise Powell Muir. She was the youngest of five children. She grew up in Parker, Idaho and attended grade school there. When she finished sixth grade the family moved to Rexburg, Idaho where she finished grade school and graduated from Madison High School in 1943. She attended Ricks College, where she was an honor student, and graduated with an Associates Degree in 1945. She worked at a munitions factory in Pocatello, Idaho for a short time to help with the war effort.

She went on to BYU and graduated in 1948. While there, she met her future husband Verl Ide Muir. After graduation she began her teaching career. She taught High School typing, shorthand, and art. She served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North West States Mission in 1952. Upon returning from her mission she taught in various High Schools in Utah.

In 1955 she had the opportunity to tour seven countries in Europe with a group of girls from college. In 1956 she also had the opportunity to go on a tour bus to all the church history sites and tour New York. She paid her own way for everything, including her mission, the Europe trip, and the trip to New York and other trips to visit family.

Irene married Verl Ide Mumford on November 26, 1958 in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple. They resided in Montpelier, Idaho for approximately 18 years where she taught in Paris, Idaho. They then moved to Vernal, Utah in 1976 where they stayed until Verl's death in 2016.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many church callings. She was relief Society President and served in the Vernal Temple for 14 years.  She donated many hours and spent many summers designing and building floats for the local 4th of July and 24th of July parades.

Irene loved oil painting and was an accomplished artist. She and Verl took several classes, she painted over 400 oil and watercolor paintings.  She sewed all of her own clothes and had an eye for decorating anything and everything.

She is preceded in death by her parents Royal Bassett Muir, and Sylvia Eloise (Powell) Muir, her husband Verl Ide Mumford, her brothers Dean Muir, and Ross Muir, her sisters Margeret Orme, and Ruth M. Ward.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am October 29, 2022 at Parker Cemetery. Condolences can be sent to the family online at www.woodfuneralhome.com.
