IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO: Helen Howell Warr, 90, of Idaho Falls, died March 12, 2003 at the home of her daughter.
She was born in Red Bay, Alabama on September 2, 1912, the third child of Ira Ethel Johnson and Emmett Presley Howell. Her family later moved to Fulton, Mississippi, where she completed high school. In 1932, she enrolled at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Through the years she remained grateful for the Berry work-study opportunity which allowed her to complete her education. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1937, and attended graduate school at both the University of Tennessee and the University of Georgia.
On December 24, 1937, she married John Carey Warr of Louisville, Alabama, her college classmate. They made their home in Rome where Helen taught fourth grade, and later home economics in the Floyd County School System. She became a full time homemaker in 1949 with the birth of their daughter.
In 1946, John was appointed Superintendent of Schools in Floyd County, and in 1949, he was name General Manager of the Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes. They then made their home near Atlanta. Throughout this period of their life together, Helen was a supportive partner and a consummate hostess. She used this opportunity to teach and nurture young residents of the homes, many of whom still remember her kindnesses. She was active in both church and community affairs as president of the Women’s Missionary Union at First Baptist Church, Hapeville, Georgia, and as president of Parent Teacher Associations at three schools.
After John’s death in 1969, Helen returned to live in Rome where she taught sixth grade for nine years. There, she was an active member of First Baptist Church where she was president of Daniel Sunday School Class. After she retired, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Floyd Medical Center and accumulated more than four thousand hours of service. She served as president of the following organizations; Rome/Floyd Retired Teachers Association, Rome Area Berry Alumni Club, and Daughters of Berry. She was an active member of American Association of University Women, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed reading, cooking for everyone, sewing, and needlepoint.
In 2002, Helen moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. She lived at Fairwinds Retirement Community for one year, and then with her daughter.

Kiefner of Idaho Falls; granddaughter, Abigail Howell Kiefner, attending Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho; a brother, James Francis (Jennie) Howell of Auburn, Indiana; and sister-in-law, Monte Smith Howell (Marvin) Fricks of Rome, Georgia.
