Hazel Elder

Hazel Campbell Elder, 92, of Idaho Falls, passed away on September 12, 2011, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. She was born February 18, 1919, in Ammon, to Alfred Easton Campbell and Ada Eveline Owen Campbell. She attended schools in the area and later graduated from Excelcis Beauty School. While in California during World War II she took Red Cross classes in nursing and nutrition. On August 9, 1941, she married Chester O. Elder in Yuma, Arizona. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. Hazel was a devoted mother and homemaker and had worked as a Dental Assistant. She also owned her own Beauty Shop where she worked as a Beautician for 42 years. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings including Dance Director, MIA President, Relief Society Counselor and Teacher, and Primary Teacher. She sang in the Ward Choir for 28 years and was an avid genealogist, serving for 9 years in the Spanish Extraction Program. Hazel crocheted over 800 hats and 600 afghans for the humanitarian efforts and was a Pink Lady at the Riverview Hospital for 5 years. She enjoyed leatherwork, artwork, and poetry, composing 65 poems of her own. Her life long dream was to become a painter. She started classes and was active in the Idaho Falls and Rigby art guilds. She also taught others including her grandchildren and great grandchildren how to paint. Survivors are: Daughter: Lorene Bright, Nampa, ID Son: Col. Stephen (Julie) Elder, Idaho Falls, ID Daughter: Sherry Roseberry, Ammon, ID Daughter: Kathie (Blair) McIntier, Ammon, ID Brother: Derlin (Deon) Campbell, Rexburg, ID Brother: Rolland (Carol) Campbell, Meridian, ID Sister: Velda Lye, Logan, UT Sister: Shirley (Ray) Park, Parker, ID 16 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Grace and Beth; and brothers, Leland, Arden, Melvin, Don, and Ray. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Life Care Center for the loving care they gave to Hazel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the Ammon LDS Stake Center (2055 S. Ammon Rd.) with Bishop Randy Collins, of the Ammon LDS 5th Ward, officiating. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side (963 S. Ammon Rd.) and on Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Ammon Cemetery.
