Grover Terrance Chatterton passed away June 29, 2013, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, surrounded by his family. He was born April 7, 1935, in Grace, Idaho, the son of Annie Mae Adams and Grover Winward Chatterton. He grew up in Grace and Pocatello.
During high school he worked at Albertsons' first grocery store, where he met his sweetheart, Barbara Ann Curtis. Grover and Barbara graduated from Pocatello High School in 1953. On June 4, 1953, they married in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. He always said she was the best thing that ever happened to him.
In 1957, he started his career with Prudential Insurance and they moved to Idaho Falls. During his career he was honored as one of Prudential’s top managers. In 1986 he retired. He helped his daughter, Cyndy, operate Chatterton Insurance Agency. His son, Chris, later took over.
Grover’s love of the outdoors, including camping in his fifth-wheel, hunting, fishing, riding horses and ATV’s, was his lifelong passion. His favorite place on earth was Island Park. He and Barbara built a cabin there and he spent much of his time remodeling, fixing, and improving it. He loved Henry’s Lake Flats and planted hundreds of trees that no one believed would live.
In 1989 Grover and Barbara started Sawtelle Rentals and Sawtelle Mountain Resort in Island Park. He involved his family in both. Sawtelle Rentals became one of the largest dealerships in the west.
In 1998 they moved to Firth, Idaho, where they lived for fifteen years until his health made it necessary to move to Ammon.
He cherished his children and their spouses, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved being with them and looking at pictures of them. He taught them many life lessons and was proud of them all.
He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings. As a youth he attended the Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge. Scouting was important to Grover, and he was active in the program. He influenced the lives of many youth. Barbara and Grover’s testimony of the gospel and their unselfish service will be an inspiration for many generations. The highlight of their LDS church service was a mission at the Promontory Ranch in Utah.
Grover is survived by his wife, Barbara, and seven children, John (Marilyn) Chatterton of Lindon, UT; Susan (David) Dewey of Idaho Falls; Sandra (Craig) Perrenoud of Ammon; Ron (Carin) Chatterton of Newcastle, WA; Cynthia Harrison of Pocatello; Dan (Teri) Chatterton of Lindon, UT; and Grover Chris (Trisha) Chatterton of Idaho Falls; 26 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirlene Turner and Ruth Edwards.
