GORDON R. STEELE
IONA, ID -- Gordon R. Steele, 81, of Iona, died October 6, 2001, at his home in Iona.
He was born November 23, 1919, at Iona, to John Robert Steele and Myrtle Emily Waldram Steele. He grew up in Iona and attended school there. He also had one year at Rick’s College.
On August 31, 1939, he married Cleo Robinson in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He has lived in Pocatello, Layton Utah, and Iona. Following their marriage they made their home in Iona, where he worked for Garrett Freight Lines before becoming a bus driver at the INEEL until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II and served as a Private First Class in the Army 90th Division from July 3, 1944 to March 1946.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many positions in the church, including Elders Quorum Counselor, in athletics, as Ward Clerk, and in many other positions. He was a Charter member in the Iona Lion’s Club and has a life membership in the Disabled Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, and family gatherings.
Survivors include Wife, Cleo R. Steele of Iona; Brother, Jack (Carol) Steele of Murray UT;Son, Roger R. Steele (Mavanee) of Shelley, Son, Alan R. Steele (Connie) of Idaho Falls, Son, Gordon Ray Steele (Laurie) of Idaho Falls, Son, Dale R. Steele of Ammon; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Max Steele and Harold Steele; and two sisters, Muriel Sobieski and Rhea Steele.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at the Iona LDS Stake Center (Ririe Highway & Iona Road) with Bishop Ken Wrightson of the Iona LDS 2nd Ward officiating.
The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.
Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Team.
