Gilfred Smart

Gilfred Warren Smart, 91, of Idaho Falls, passed away April 30, 2013, at Turtle and Crane Assisted Living Center. He was born July 8, 1921, at Hurley, Missouri to Benjamin Harrison Smart and Clara Marie Barton Smart. He grew up and attended schools in the area. Gilfred served as a Carpenters Mate 3rd Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp helping to build the road from Alpine to Jackson, Wyoming. On April 3, 1940, he married Noma Fontella Sanderson in Idaho Falls, Idaho. In their early years, he farmed in New Sweden, Challis, and Idaho Falls. In 1957, he began working for the Post Office from which he retired. He was a volunteer in the Idaho Reserves and National Guard, and was a member of the Idaho Gem and Mineral Society. He was formerly a member of the Eagles Lodge. Gilfred was a Southern Baptist. He enjoyed fishing, rock hounding, traveling, making jewelry and spending time in Quartzsite, Arizona. Survivors are: Wife: Noma Smart, Idaho Falls, ID Daughter: Loa (Jess) Bastible, Norman, OK Son: Roger (Dorothy) Smart, Idaho Falls, ID Son: Gilfred (Linda) Smart, Jr., Tremonton, UT Daughter: Debra (Fred) Kovach, Idaho Falls, ID Brother: Harold (Opal) Smart, Michigan Brother: Jim (Carrol) Smart, Marionville, MO Brother: Ralph (Helen) Smart, Republic, MO Brother: Ben (Sandy) Smart, College Place, Washington Sister: Berthena Wimberley, Marionville, MO Sister: Ruth Hopkins, Marionville, MO 20 Grandchildren, 31 Great Grandchildren and numerous Great Great Grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Robert, Glen, and Arnold; and 1 sister, Dortha Faye Rinehart. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Turtle and Crane Assisted Living and Onesource Hospice for their loving care of Gilfred. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge) in Idaho Falls. The family will visit with friends from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
