GEORGIA SCHNUCKEL
Georgia Schnuckel left us quietly on January 25, 2002. This independent, gentle and sometimes stubborn lady was the center of her family with a love that was always constant, a shoulder always ready to lean on, an ear always ready to listen and a helping hand always extended.
Born in Kalkaska, Michigan, the youngest of six children, she journeyed to Washington. D.C., as a young woman, to work with the then very new Atomic Energy Commission. She continued her career with the AEC in Idaho Falls, a town she called home for the rest of her life. But the majority of Georgia’s working life was spent as an integral part of the Idaho Falls Fire Department, where she was the secretary to numerous Fire Chiefs for over twenty years. She constantly worried about her “boys” as they fought each fire or medical emergency. Her concern never wavered even as the years went by.
Her nineteen year marriage to Harold Schnuckel produced four wonderful children. David (wife Kathy), Teresa, Brian (wife Joanne) and Michael. She was also blessed with 6 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her family was her center and gave her the most happiness and contentment.
As in a life of any length, there are moments of great sadness. One of Georgia’s was the wrenching loss of her son, Michael, in 1963. It was a hole in her heart that could never be filled , a tear that was ever-present but not seen.
In a still pond, the pebble thrown into the center produces so many waves. In Georgia’s case, her life, like that rippled pond, affected so many. Her love for her support group at the hospital, her smiles and laughter with her children.
Georgia so appreciated the simple things of life - watching the antics of a squirrel on her backyard fence, her joy of music, the laughter from an old Red Skelton routine, a challenging crossword puzzle or the ever-present need to keep in-touch with the latest news from CNN.
In lieu of flowers, please send your remembrances to the “Easy Breathers” COPD Support Group or the Idaho Kids With Asthma Camp - both can be contacted through Marilyn Miller, Pulmonary Rehab Dept, EIRMC.
Georgia left us gently and with great dignity, but her legacy is as loud as the fire engines she so loved. We hope the next time you hear the gentle sounds of a songbird, a heart stopping routine from RiverDance or the ever present siren from one of our brave firefighters or Paramedics, you will remember this very special woman. Georgia Schnuckel’s time came too soon but she left us with so much. How lucky we were to have known and loved her.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2002 at the Wood Chapel of the Pines with Chaplain Marv Eld officiating. The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to the service at Wood Funeral Home.
