Genevieve Leona Bateman Deffinger, 87, of Idaho Falls, passed away March 24, 2011 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center from natural causes. She was born October 5, 1923 in Chester, Idaho, to Joseph Lorenzo Bateman and Eunice Cherlottie Hawkins Bateman. She grew up and attended school in Iona and later moved to Idaho Falls. On May 3, 1942, she married John Paul Deffinger in Idaho Falls. Jennie was a mother and a home maker. She and Paul raised five children. Jennie enjoyed genealogy, gardening, crafts, and cooking. She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Jennie’s survivors include her son, Paul Steve (Judy) Deffinger of Pocatello, ID; daughter, Shirley Ann (Don) Sherwood of Idaho Falls; daughter Vickie Lee Sanders of Boise, ID; daughter, Sandra Jean Beebe of Idaho Falls; daughter Debbie Rae (Tracy) Shappart of Pocatello; 19 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren, and her sisters Faye Heyrend and Fern Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Tyler Adam Thompson; great grandson, Jack Sawyer Cochran; brothers, Ira Bateman, E.W. Bateman, Leonard Bateman, Eldon Bateman; sisters, May Whitehead, Maggie Olsen, and Peggy Asper. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Wood Funeral Home , 273 North Ridge Avenue, with Kerry Howell officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening and 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services, both visitations at Wood’s. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial park under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Jennie’s name to the Idaho Division of Veterans Services, 351 Collins Rd., Boise, ID 83702.
