Eugene Davis Smith, 70, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 5, 2015, at his home.
Gene was born September 4, 1944, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Ed D. Smith and Sherma Graves Smith. He grew up and attended schools in Albuquerque. After high school, he was drafted in to the United States Army and served during the Vietnam conflict with Special Forces. After his military service, he lived in Salt Lake City, where he met and married M. Louise Hill. Together they had two children, Dave and Shauna. They moved to Idaho Falls in 1975, where he owned and operated Teton sign Service. Later he and Louise divorced.
He remarried Jan Whitsett, they moved to Crestview , Florida in 1988. While in Florida he owned and operated The Sign Doctor. They divorced in 1997. He then moved back to Idaho in 2005 to be closer to his children, where he lived out his life.
He enjoyed the outdoors. Gene loved to share his knowledge of survival that he learned while in the Army and teaching his kids and grandkids how to live off the land. He loved hunting, fishing boating and four-wheeling. Dad could fix anything from his computer to anything mechanical. He was a huge dog lover and always loved them like his children.
Gene is survived by
his son, Dave (Keri) Smith of Idaho Falls;
daughter, Shauna (Pat) Jones of Garland, UT;
sister, Dixie (Darrell) Wade of San Diego, CA;
and four grandchildren, Tristan and Kaleb Jones, and Harrison and Hailey Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ed D. Smith, mother, Sherma Smith, and grandsons, Hayden and Hunter Smith.
The family asks for donations to be made to the VA Hospital in lieu of any flowers.
Military Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015, at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery, 4600 South Yellowstone.
