Gary John Hunter

Gary John Hunter, beloved educator, coach, and family man, passed away September 17, 2024, peacefully at the age of 88.

He was born on September 24, 1935, in Seattle, Washington, to John Sheldon and Pearl Castle Hunter. He was an only child who thrived on learning and adventure. He recounted fond memories of sledding down his street and being pulled back up the hill by his neighbors with their cars.

During World Ward II, Gary moved to Rosemead, California, where he grew up and graduated from Rosemead High School. He attended Fresno State where he played basketball, igniting a lifelong passion for the sport. After completing his education, he became a dedicated teacher, sharing his love for horticulture, drivers education, and physical education with countless students. As a basketball coach, he led his teams to seven league championships, earning respect and admiration from players and peers alike. His commitment to his students and their success was a defining aspect of his life.

Gary’s heart belonged to Barbara Fae Beam, whom he met as a child. They married in 1964, and together they welcomed their son, Mark John Hunter.

Gary cherished the summers spent in Swan Valley, Idaho, with his grandparents. He continued this tradition with his own family, teaching drivers education in the area since 1979. He relocated to Swan Valley with Barbara in 1996, and continued teaching students there until the program closed a few years later. His repeated stories of students learning to drive are remembered by many.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; their son, Mark (Treana); grandchildren, Jason (Andi), Chad (Courtney), Chelsey (Daniel), Jennifer (Oliver), and Sarah. Gary loved taking scenic drives and spending time with his family. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and passion for teaching will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lincoln Court Assisted Living Center and Symbii Home Health and Hospice for their love and care during Gary’s final days.
