Gary Holtom

Gary S Holtom, 84, of Idaho Falls, passed away March 9, 2018, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Gary was born January 14, 1934, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Jesse Everett Holtom and Bessie Storer Holtom. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho Falls and attended Iona High School and graduated from the first graduating class of Bonneville High School. Gary served an LDS mission in the Northwestern States Mission. He attended Ricks College, received his Bachelor’s Degree from BYU and later received his Master’s Degree from Arizona State University. On May 11, 1956, he married JoAnn Kay Burgess in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. To this union were born six children, Laura, Scott, Peter, Suzanne, Amy and Kristin. Gary and JoAnn made their home in Utah, Illinois, Arizona, California, and Idaho Falls, Idaho. Gary worked as a teacher and coach at Keith Country Day School in Rockford, Illinois, and Phoenix Country Day School in Phoenix, Arizona. He later worked as a sales representative for Harper & Row Publishing in Southern California. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as an early morning Seminary teacher, high councilor and Bishop. He and his wife, JoAnn, served a mission at the Mesa, Arizona Temple Visitor Center, Mesa Cannery and Mesa, Arizona Temple. He enjoyed BYU sports, getting a good deal, chocolate and serving in the temple. Gary is survived by his daughter, Laura (Scott) Breyman of Pullman, WA; son, Scott (Arlene) Holtom of Enterprise, UT; son, Peter (Brenda) Holtom of Draper, UT; daughter, Suzanne (Jack) Garvin of Queens Creek, AZ; daughter, Amy (Blaine) Thatcher of Pleasant Grove, UT; daughter, Kristin (Duane) Farley of Farmington, UT; brother, Steve (Jan) Holtom of Idaho Falls, ID; 21 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Everett and Bessie Holtom; wife, JoAnn Kay Holtom; brother, Dave Holtom; and great granddaughter, Audrey Rose Breyman. Graveside Services will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery, 4602 S. Yellowstone Highway, with Bishop Jason Skillings of the Idaho Falls LDS 24th Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 11-11:45 a.m. prior to services at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the LDS Missionary Fund or Humanitarian Aid Fund.
