Gary Arnold Duncan was born July 10, 1942, in Twin Falls, Idaho, and died peacefully October 13, 2017, at his home in Swan Valley, Idaho.
Gary was raised in the Twin Falls/Jerome area, where he spent much of his time hunting pheasants, rabbits, ducks and big game with his best friend Lonnie Ambrose and his brother Grant. Memories of those times were cherished and talked about his whole life. Gary graduated from Jerome High School and later attended ISU in Pocatello.
In 1963, he married Patty Vinyard. They had two children, Destry and Lisa, and were later divorced.
In 1967, he moved to the Hailey-Ketchum area, where he met the love of his life, and his best friend, Janice Hunt. They were married on March 12, 1981, adding her two children, Alan Simpson and Rebecca Simpson to his family. His love for his family was deep and his four children were a source of great pride.
Gary worked as an electrician for many years, until he opened his own shop, "Gary’s Automotive" which he operated until 2000. He was respected as an honest and hard-working man who mastered his crafts. In 2003, he and Janice opened the Rendezvous at the South Fork, a fly shop, RV Park and cabin rental business in Swan Valley, Idaho. He made many friends of the local people and of the guests and customers he met.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman. Many an hour was spent hunting and fishing, sometimes with others and sometimes alone, along the mountain tops and river banks were where he felt most alive and closest to God. He was very generous with his knowledge and talents, sharing his love of the outdoors with friends and family. Perhaps more than anything he especially loved sharing outings with young people, getting them started in the sports he loved.
Gary loved his pets dearly. He felt his spoiled dogs were part of his family and he treated them so. Many smiled as they watched this big, strong outdoorsman coddle his little yorkies.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Finnigsmeier, his adoptive father, Charles Ray Duncan, and his mother, Audine Duncan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice, his daughters, Lisa (Joe) Inman, Rebecca Simpson; sons, Destry (Becky) Duncan and Alan (Amber) Simpson; sisters, Karole Austin and Sherry Pappert; brothers, Grant Duncan and Kim Duncan; 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved with all his heart. He was well-loved and will be greatly missed.
