Fred Tingey

FRED H. TINGEY IDAHO FALLS, ID -- At the dawning of a beautiful Sabbath morning on November 20, 2005, Fred H. Tingey peacefully passed away while surrounded by family members. Fred was raised in Brigham City, Utah, where he was born February 3, 1923, the son of Guy Anton Tingey and Lavene Korth Tingey. When World War II broke out, he entered the U. S. Army Air Corps, and with the rank of Captain, served for three years in Burma. After the war he married Mary Bauman of Driggs, Idaho, on April 11, 1947, in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. Following their marriage he continued his education and obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Washington in 1951. Fred’s career in the nuclear industry took him to Richland, Washington; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Monterey, California; and eventually back to Idaho Falls, where he and Mary settled to raised their family. Fred was a member of several national and international panels and committees relating to the atomic energy industry and nuclear materials management. His professional activities took him all over the world. Fred was also involved in local community affairs and coached several youth baseball and basketball teams. He also enjoyed a 9-year term on the District 91 School Board and was a member of several local committees. Fred was a strong advocate of education and was delighted with the opportunity of being involved in the development of University Place and increasing the opportunities for higher education in the Idaho Falls area. He retired as director of University Place in 1995. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings. True to his nature, his favorite calling was teaching Sunday School. Fred loved living in Southeast Idaho, with its opportunities for outdoor recreation. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and cherished the time he spent outdoors with his family and friends. In his latter years, he loved to follow the activities of his grandchildren and took great pride in everything they did. Family was always his number one priority. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Tingey, and his children, Kristine (Mark) Secrist, Kirk R. (Gayle) Tingey, Terry F. (Paula) Tingey, Joel E. (Stacey) Tingey, J. Martin (Dana) Tingey, and Jason B. (Diane) Tingey. Fred and Mary have 24 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at the Idaho Falls LDS 28th Ward, 1165 Azalea, with Bishop Cleo Geddes officiating. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and on Wednesday for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Ammon Cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Fred H. Tingey Memorial Scholarship Fund at any branch of the Bank of Commerce. _________________________________________________ Condolences sent: Andy Kaus (AndyK@turbonet.com) Our thoghts and prayers are with the Tingey family at this time, with the loss of Fred. My father Paul Kaus, had the highest regard for Fred as they were setting up and running the UI center at Idaho Falls, and in the following years with the B-Tech program at the U of I, which I was a part of. Thank you to Fred and family for all those years, pushing education and continuing education, and making a diverse curriculum available to everyone.
