Fred Haroldsen

Fred Oliver Haroldsen, 91, passed away peacefully Friday, July 14, 2017, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was born March 13, 1926, near Idaho Falls, the second son of Oliver Haroldsen and Celecta Ottley Haroldsen. Fred was raised on a farm on St. Leon Road and lived in that vicinity most of his life. He attended St. Leon School, where he skipped second grade and always joked of being the salutatorian in his 8th grade class of four. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1943. Fred grew up working on the farm along with his three brothers. His childhood was happy, with adventures involving dogs, farm animals, and the mischief boys find. He was drafted and reported for military service on Christmas evening, 1944, and was assigned to the U. S. Navy. He was stationed on the Philippine Island of Samar. When Fred returned to civilian life, he enrolled at Utah State University. While studying agricultural engineering he met Hannah Elizabeth Condie at a dance. He considered it the most fortunate event of his life when he and "Tizz" were married July 21, 1948, in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. They were happily married for 63 years until Tizz died in 2012. Fred’s attentive care for Tizz in the last years of her life was a great example of unselfish and eternal love. Fred and Elizabeth raised five children who believe they have the world’s best parents. After graduating from Utah State in 1950, he opened a farm implement business. Soon after moving to Idaho Falls in 1954, Fred began working for what is now the INL. In 1961, he obtained a masters degree in mechanical engineering from USU. He returned to work at the INL and retired in 1991. He had a lifelong love of learning and passed on this intellectual curiosity to his family. Fred was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He conscientiously served in numerous callings and leadership positions. From 1992-1994 he and Tizz enjoyed serving in the Florida Tampa Mission. He stated the two most important things in his life were his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He appreciated the beauties of nature and passed that love to his family. No summer was complete without a trip to Yellowstone Park and camping trips and hikes. His goal was to capture the perfect photo of a sunset, wildflower, or waterfall. The family sincerely appreciates all who cared for Fred as his health declined. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, Grant, a son-in-law, Jack G. Misner, a grandson, Benjamin Haroldsen, and a great granddaughter, Kaydrie Van Dyke. Surviving him are his brothers, Ray of Idaho Falls, and Orvil of West Hills, CA; his children, Lyn Misner, Craig (Kathie) Haroldsen, Gwen (David) Schwieder, Brent (Donna) Haroldsen, and DeAnn (Eric) Johnson; 24 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Idaho Falls LDS St. Leon Ward, 6925 North 15th East. Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 28th, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 South Ammon Road, and from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
