Floyd Oberg - 05/14/2002 Floyd Oberg - 05/14/2002 Floyd Oberg IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Floyd Gene Oberg, 62, of Idaho Falls, passed away Monday, May 13, 2002, peacefully at his home with his family after an extended battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gladys, siblings, Clyde and Judy of Billings, Montana, and Ed of Shepherd, Montana, daughter, Cheryl Rolph and her husband, DeWayne, of Kent, Washington, and sons, Floyd, Jr. and his wife, Kelli, of Boise, and Paris and his wife, Tammy, of Idaho Falls, as well as adored and treasured grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Peggy Sue Lund. Floyd was born on May 28, 1939, to Clifton Gregory Oberg and Eva Lavina Polen Oberg in Billings, Montana. He was named after gangster “Pretty Boy Floyd” and his wild spirit and rebellious nature was sometimes akin to his namesake. As did many people of his day, age, and circumstances, Floyd grew up fast and shouldered many of life’s responsibilities early on. By the age of 21 he had already been working for over a decade, was married to his beloved Gladys Fay Field on October 27, 1956, at Columbus, Montana, and was father to his four children. Pride, honor, and integrity were important values and character traits of Floyd and he passed them on to his children and grandchildren. “Your word, a handshake, and honesty” were important and he taught the lessons well with his example. His life goal was a commitment to handing over a better world to his children . . . “Dad, you succeeded magnificently!” Floyd was an avid sports fan with a tremendous sports trivia knowledge. Baseball, football, boxing, you name it. He loved to hunt and fish in Montana and knew the back country well in his younger years. He was a “do-it-yourself-er” with plumbing, electrical, mechanical, wood working, and carpentry skills. He taught to always do your best, regardless of the task or job. He liked new cars . . . especially the fast ones! Floyd’s personality and values gained him many friendships over the years, but it is fitting that his closest was always his brothers, Clyde and Ed. He enjoyed their camaraderie and kinship. He loved his family and always expressed pride of his wife and children. His special niche in life was as a granddad and the bond he formed with his grandchildren is special and memorable. One of his life’s passions was The BBQ Pit and he acquired many heartfelt and valued friendships from that endeavor. Dad, your special spirit and sense of humor will be missed. Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Wood Chapel of the Pines, with Cory Brower officiating. Burial will follow in Fielding Memorial Park under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. The family suggests donations to the Salvation Army, 605 North Boulevard, Idaho Falls, ID 83402 Gladys and Family,Although no words could ease the pain and sense of loss that you currently feel, please know that our hearts go out to all you. Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing Floyd as well as I would have liked, I must say that every encounter that we've had with him was an enjoyable experience. He always made time to talk to us and offer his unique insight on whatever topic of discussion was at hand. His smile was genuine; his kindness was sincere. I will miss seeing his shiny head and hearing his humorous banter. I feel that I am a better person for knowing him. Stay strong and find confort from those around you. And don't let pride get in the way of reaching out to us when you need a shoulder to lean on, or a friendly ear to listen to you. May God bless you all.
