Floyd "Bud" Nielsen, 86, of Idaho Falls, passed away June 22, 2013, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Bud was born April 24, 1927, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Ephriam Nielsen and Rose Shelottie Lyman Nielsen. He grew up in Idaho Falls and attended East Side Elementary, O. E. Bell Junior High, and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1945. In 1946, he joined the U. S. Army and served his country in Zuma, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1947 with the rank of Sergeant.
On November 26, 1954, he married Joy Kathleen Maheras in Idaho Falls. They had two daughters, Lorraine and Liz. From 1948 to 1961, Bud farmed in the Idaho Falls area, raising potatoes, grain, and alfalfa. In 1964, he passed the Idaho Insurance Licensee Examination for Property and Casualty Insurance, and in 1968 he passed the Idaho Real Estate Broker's Examination. He was Manager of the Real Estate Department at The Hartwell Corporation from 1961 until his retirement in 1991. He served as Vice President, President, and served three years on the Board of Directors of the Idaho Falls Board of Realtors. He was also State Director of the Idaho Association of Realtors for three years. He enjoyed attending Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce After Hours, even many years after retirement. In 1981, Bud was appointed by the Mayor of Idaho Falls to the Resource Recovery Advisory Council.
Bud was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He loved woodworking and built many tables, stools, cupboards, and specialty furniture for friends and family. He also enjoyed puzzles, reading, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling, from simple drives in the country to family vacations in Disneyland. He loved planning and attending his high school reunions. He had a great gift for conversation and would often stop to chat with former clients or friends. He loved people and made an impact on nearly every one he met. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend and will be missed by many.
Bud is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, JoyDaughter, Lorraine Nielsen of Kirkland, WA; Daughter, Liz (Aaron) Bryers of Twin Falls, ID; Sister, Afton Howlett of Idaho Falls, ID; Sister, Wanda (Herman) Handy of Idaho Falls, ID;
and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and several half brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church, 325 Elm Street (east entrance), with Reverend Dr. Dennis Falasco officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
