Ferrel Wood

Ferrel Wyatt Wood, 89, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 31, 2011, at Idaho Falls Care and Rehab. Ferrel was born February 10, 1922, in the family home at Rexburg, Idaho, to George Hirst Wood and Sarah Barnes Wyatt Wood. He was the youngest of ten children. He grew up on his dad’s dry farm in Moody Creek and attended school in Rexburg, however, he graduated from El Segundo High School in California in 1940. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II and trained as a pilot at the Air Corps Pilot School in Marfa, Texas, in 1945. While in the service he married Carol Jane King in Pullman, Washington, on December 25, 1943. After the war ended he and Jane lived in Wisconsin for a short while and then in Rexburg, where he and a friend owned and operated Woody’s Drive-In. While in Rexburg he attended Ricks College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1956. He received his MBA from the University of Idaho in 1972. Ferrel and Jane settled in Idaho Falls in 1950, where he farmed and worked at the INL as an accountant. He retired in 1982. He and Jane spent many wonderful winters in Kingman and Yuma, Arizona, during their retirement. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some of the things he enjoyed doing included flying his airplane with his son, Doug, farming and singing. He also enjoyed sharing stories of his childhood and time spent with his brother, Seth, and sister, Mary. Throughout his life, some of his happiest hours were spent with his family. Ferrel is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jane, four children, Douglas (Sandra) Wood of Idaho Falls, ID, Michael (Suzanne) Wood of Sun City, CA, Barbara (Paul) Baird of Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Steven (Carol) Wood of Sacramento, CA; nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Idaho Falls Care and Rehab. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Idaho Youth Ranch, P. O. Box 8538, Boise, ID 83707.
