Fay Huls

Fay Pierce Huls, 91, formally of Pocatello and Aberdeen, passed away January 24, 2013, at her home in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She had been living there for the past year. Fay was the third of seven children born to Isaac Thomas and Susan LaVera Measom Pierce on May 17, 1921, in Aberdeen, Idaho. She grew up on the farm, learning strong family values and hard work. She remembered working in the fields, hauling hay, digging their own potatoes, topping beets, and milking cows at a young age. Work was not the only thing she remembered about her childhood, however. There was also plenty of time for fishing and boating trips to the river, smoking out rock chucks, family picnics, and having a great time with her cousins and neighbors. Fay spent the first twelve years of her education in Aberdeen. In high school, she was involved in sports and was on the first all-girls basketball team. She graduated on her birthday in 1939. In the fall of that year, she attended Albion State Normal School. After her two years of intense study she received her Special Primary Certificate. She taught school in Grandview, Pocatello, and Idaho Falls. In the summer of her second year of teaching, a friend convinced her to go to California to see the sights. It was here that she met the love of her life, William John Huls. After two and a half years of long distance dating, they were married March 19, 1945, in California. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in March 20, 1951. After the war, Bill and Fay bought a farm north of Aberdeen where they lived, farmed, and raised their family of five children. Fay eventually began teaching again in the Aberdeen School District. Later she became the high school librarian, a position that she thoroughly enjoyed. She touched the lives of many students during her time in the district. When Fay retired, she and Bill enjoyed traveling to see their family and also many winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. They served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the Washington D.C. Mission they worked with the Asian refugees. This service created friendships that were considered as family. Their mission to San Bernardino, California, also had many faith promoting experiences. Fay served in many capacities in the church, both in her stake and ward. Mom liked to travel, especially going to new places. She was never afraid to talk with people and often times would strike up conversations with those whom she had never met. In her earlier years, she enjoyed sewing, handiwork, and making quilts. She was a great cook, enjoyed planting a garden, and canned much of her home grown produce. Her greatest joy was being with her family. Fay is survived by her three sons, Thomas (Nancy) Huls, of Pocatello, Idaho; Lon (Kathy) Huls, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Ted (Carole) Huls, of Yakima, Washington; daughter, Bavia (Steve) Gibson, of Rupert, Idaho; two sisters, Madge Little, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Bonnie Houghland, of Lake Havasu, Arizona; 20 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William John Huls, daughter, Mona Fay Huls Rhudy, daughter-in-law, Pamela Terry Huls, parents, Isaac & Vera Pierce, two brothers, Delos Pierce and Scott Pierce, and two sisters, Alene Taylor and Eleanor Norton. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, February 1, 2013, with a viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by the funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the Pocatello LDS Highland 3rd Ward, (corner of Butte & Hiskey Streets, in Pocatello, Idaho, with Bishop Ted Schow conducting. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Aberdeen Cemetery in Aberdeen, Idaho. The family wishes to thank all for their kindness and service to our Mother.
