On November 12, 1920, a determined, independent baby daughter was born to “goodly parents,” Zavan D. Green and Berniece Nora Jeffery Green. Her brother, Volney welcomed her. They had the opportunity to welcome little brother, Ernest D. Green, better known as “Bub,” and then little sister, Alta Bernice. She grew up on the family farm where there were cows to milk, potatoes to pick and so on.
Ethel attended first through third grade at Basalt, then school was switched to Firth. She graduated from Firth High School.
On October 14, 1940, she married Edwin Harold Haddon. They lived in Idaho Falls and then Jackson. During WWII, they went to California to see about Harold working in the ship yards. They were told to go back to Idaho and farm, as that was also part of the war effort. They were blessed with three children: Shirley, Wayne, and Sandra. They lived in Idaho Falls, and later moved to Iona where they enjoyed a more country style of living.
Ethel worked at the White Star Laundry and in potato warehouses sorting potatoes. When Woolworths or Newberry's had soda fountains, she worked there. Later, she worked in the cafeteria at EBR 2. Maybe you have had the good fortune of tasting some of her desserts? Like apple dumpling with vanilla sauce!
She enjoyed flowers, raspberries, and other gardening. She was also a good seamstress. She embroidered beautiful dish towels and pillow cases, as well as making receiving blankets to welcome her grandchildren.
Ethel spent many years decorating the horse barns at the Eastern Idaho State Fair for her father's Belgians. In 1976, she celebrated the nation's bicentennial by joining her father on the Bicentennial Wagon Train Pilgrimage to Pennsylvania. Harold, Sandra, and granddaughter, Jo Dee, also participated. A few years later, she joined with some draft horse friends to go back East where her father participated in the circus parade. In the circus wagon, his strawberry roan Belgians pulled, in the parade was a cage with a lion.
After her mother passed away, she took care of her aged father for about 7 years. After his demise, she moved back to Idaho Falls where she enjoyed the brief walk to the senior citizen center to play pinochle.
By September of 2017, her hearing and health had declined. While we appreciate the help of Home Helpers, it was time for a change. She moved to Parkwood Meadows. She has enjoyed the trip to Bear World, the Potato Museum, etc.
Early in the morning of July 11, 2022, “our loss was heaven's gain” as Ethel passed from this life. Those who have gone before her include: her father, Zavan D. Green; mother, Berniece Green; husband, Edwin Harold Haddon; brother, Earnest D. Green, better known as “Bub;” brother, Volney Green; sister, Alta Steffler; son, Wayne Harold Haddon; and grandson, Justin Neal Robinson.
We express our gratitude for the staff and residents of Parkwood Assisted Living and Brio Hospice for caring for our mother.
Richard Garret, a 19th Century English writer stated: “Love is the greatest gift one generation can give another.” Thank you, Mom! As Grace E. Easley said, “Your gentle touch remains upon the hearts of those who loved you best.”
