Louis Emery Montoya, 75, of Idaho Falls, had a heart attack early Monday morning while clearing the snow with his brand new snowblower. He passed away December 16, 2015, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Emery was born on Valentine’s Day in 1940 near Pagosa Springs, Colorado, to Louis Manuel Montoya and Trinidad Maria Trujillo Montoya. He belonged to a Montoya and Trujillo family that had lived in the Colorado/New Mexico area before it was the United States, before it was Mexico, and when it was the territory of El Virreinato de la Nueva España , the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

Emery served honorably in the U.S. army between 1961 and 1965. While studying at the University of Utah to earn a Bachelor of Science in physics he met Cathie Jones. They were married in 1966 and moved to Idaho Falls in 1973 where they raised their two boys Eric and Aaron. Like many Idahoans, Emery loved to hunt, fish, and ski and just about anything else that involved being with his family. He loved to travel and tell stories. Emery was often times cantankerous and downright bullheaded but he will be remembered for his belief that equality, inclusion, and compassion are America’s best values and greatest strategy for security. His only regret is that he will miss the 2016 ski season at Grand Targhee with his buddies. His family would like to thank him for putting up the lights and shoveling the driveway before we arrived for Christmas.

We love you and will miss you dearly. He is survived by his wife, two sons, daughters-in-law, Tracey and Yula, and the two joys of his life: Ava and Emiliano. He is also survived by his two sisters Irene and Dorothy, and brother Bobby, with whom he would like to do it all over again—especially the early days on the ranch. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2015, at the Idaho Falls LDS 31st Ward, 1165 Azalea. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church.
