Edward "Ed Backus" Backus

Edward Evens Backus, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired, died September 13, 2010, at his home in Idaho Falls. He was under the care of Idaho Home Health and Hospice. He was born June 30, 1926, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Rodman F. Backus and Anna C. Hall Backus. He attended school in Fall River, Massachusetts, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943, and retired in 1967. In 1952, he married Gertrude (Trudy) Davis of Idaho Falls. In 1965, he and his wife adopted a family of seven children. He was President of Farm Bureau in San Diego and farmed in California until moving to Idaho in 1975. He was a past mayor and fire chief of Irwin and worked at 3-Bs of Idaho Falls. Edward enjoyed farming, painting, nonfiction reading, fishing, and was a Master Gardener of Idaho. He especially loved his family and spending time with them. He is survived by his five daughters; Mary (Aaron) Foust of San Diego, CA, Cheryl Leonard of Vista, CA, Elise (Ted) Porter of Carlsbad, CA, Lynette (Brent) Martin of Shelley, ID, and Trudi (Eric) Stubbs of Escondido, CA; two sons, Paul E. (Nancy) Dorey of Vista, CA and Dennis A. (Cheri) Backus of Huntland, TN; 22 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and one sister, Anita Cimeno of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, his brother, and one great grandchild. A graveside memorial service will be held for Gertrude Rae Davis Backus and Edward at 11 a.m. at Ririe-Shelton Cemetery on Saturday, June 25, 2011. All family and friends are invited to attend.
