Earl Gary Steed, 82, of Idaho Falls, passed away July 11, 2025, at his home. He was under the care of his loving family and Solace Hospice.
Gary was born December 11, 1942, in Ogden, Utah, to Earl Raymond Steed and Carol Clark Steed. He grew up and attended schools in Sunset, Utah, and graduated from Davis High School. He also attended Ricks College, BYU, ISU, and USU.
On December 17, 1965, he married Sonia Burton in the Salt Lake City Temple, Utah. Gary and Sonia made their home in Rigby where Gary sold machinery for Case Equipment. He farmed for many years while also growing and marketing certified potato seed.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in the Northern California Mission. He served faithfully in many positions in the church, including five years as a Bishop at Ricks College. He later served two missions in the Farmington, New Mexico Mission with his eternal companion in the garden program with the Navajo people in Arizona.
He was on the Idaho Potato Seed Selection Committee. He raised Nuclear Generation Seed Potatoes, and was instrumental in bringing the Ranger, Norkotah, Shepody, Ida Rose and Western Potato varieties, to Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. His greatest joys were family, fishing, hunting, and gardening.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sonia Steed; daughter, Marcelle (Daren) Stegelmeier of Morgan, UT; daughter, Alyson Walker of Salt Lake City, UT; son, Garth (Jewelee) Steed of Kingman, AZ; son, Greg (Chris) Steed of Herriman, UT; daughter, Amanda (Jesse) Helm of Casper, WY; son, Gerrick (Heather) Steed of West Valley City, UT; son, Bruce (Kelsey) Steed of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Grant (Crystal) Steed of Malad, ID; daughter, Kathleen (Jase) Forgeon of Nephi, UT; sister, Colleen Faerber of Idaho Falls, ID; brother, David (Marsha) Steed of Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Carolyn (Larry) Finn of Idaho Falls, ID; brother, Paul (Deborah) Steed of Salt Lake City, UT; 38 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Raymond and Carol Steed; and his son, Eric Steed.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Labelle Ward Chapel, 4223 E. 528 N. in Rigby, Idaho. Visitations for family and friends will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, and Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Annis-Little Butte Cemetery.
