Dr. Duane H Smith

Dr. Duane H Smith, 79, of Idaho Falls, passed away May 13, 2026, at his home surrounded by his wife and several of his children.

Duane was born August 12, 1946, in Soda Springs, Idaho, to Horace Egbert Smith and Olive Theone Cooper Smith. He grew up in Goshen, Idaho, and graduated from Firth High School. He later attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and graduated with his Doctorate from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.

On May 11, 1968, he married Audrey Lennore Clarke in the Idaho Falls Temple. Duane and Audrey made their home in many places including Provo, Utah; Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; Powell River, BC, Canada; Davenport, Iowa; Cache Valley, Utah; and Topeka and Wichita, Kansas, before settling in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the early 1980’s to raise their 8 children.

They resided in Colorado Springs for more than 35 years where Dr. Smith worked as a Doctor of Chiropractic and had a flourishing Chiropractic Clinic until 2015. He was forced into immediate retirement at that time when he had a stroke and heart attack, from which he was told he would not survive. He worked very hard to rehabilitate after that incident, during which time he and Audrey moved to Idaho Falls where he eventually resumed his healing career from the comfort of his home.

Duane and Audrey were married for 58 years and raised 8 amazing children, who in turn blessed them with 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren (so far…).

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in the Gulf States from 1965 to 1967. He also served an addiction recovery service mission with his sweetheart, Audrey, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 2012-2014. He was an Eagle Scout, FFA president, and in the ROTC. He also taught health classes for the community for over 50 years, always encouraging attendees to bring a sick friend.

Duane was a devoted patriot with a deep love for his country. He was also true, blue BYU and always eager to watch the Cougars play football or basketball. He enjoyed camping, hunting, all things Boy Scouts, quilting, weaving, storytelling, waterskiing, softball, teaching, boating, sitting on the beach in Cancun, and spending time with his family. He was a friend to all, giving generously of his time, talents, and energy to build, serve, and uplift others.

Duane is survived by his wife, Audrey Smith of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter, Davilyn (John) Laughlin of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Debra (Thomas) Baker of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Adam (Amy) Smith of Arlington, TN; son, Aaron (Carri) Smith of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Denise (Bradley) Roedel of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Andrew Smith of Grand Junction, CO; son, Alma (Nicole) Smith of Elma, WA; brother, Kent Smith of Ogden, UT; sister, Louise Bowman of Chandler, AZ; sister, Ethlene (Marvin) Rock of Inkom, ID; sister, Mavanie Vein of Orem, UT; 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Danielle Smith; sister, Jewel Barzee; and sister, Shawna Speirs.
