Douglas Smith - 11/04/2002 Douglas Smith - 11/04/2002 DOUGLAS SMITH IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Loving husband, father and grandfather, Douglas Smith, died November 3, 2002, at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. Doug was born April 21, 1927, in Murray, Utah, to parents Stanley Severn Smith and Vera Labrum Smith. He grew up enjoying the fields and pheasants of Granger, Utah. At Granite High School in Salt Lake City he met his future wife, Barbara Bonham, established life-long friendships, and loved playing basketball. At age 18 and toward the end of World War II, Doug enlisted in the hospital corps of the United States Navy. After discharge, he enrolled in the University of Utah School of Pharmacy, where he was a member of the first graduating class in 1950. He married Barbara September 17, 1947 in the Salt Lake City Temple. In 1955, Doug moved to Idaho Falls to manage the downtown Walgreen Drug Store. In 1965, he founded Eastgate Drug on 17th Street in Ammon, Idaho. At that time, 17th Street was but a two-lane road, and the store was surrounded by open fields and farmland. He loved his work, and the many customers and friends at Eastgate Drug were a source of great joy to him. Doug was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He cared deeply for the people of the Eleventh Ward, where he twice served as Bishop and enjoyed working in various other positions. In 1998, he and Barbara were called to the Massachusetts, Boston Mission, where they served in the Cape Cod Brewster Branch. Doug is survived by wife Barbara; children Kristine (Kim) Purcell, Steven (Merina) Smith, Jill (John) Swain, Corey (Cindy) Smith, Drew (Debbie) Smith, and Andra Smith Hansen; grandchildren Joshua, Tacie, Mitzi, Lincoln and Season Purcell; Nathanael, Rachel, Maria, Jesse, and Christian Smith; Tyler, Leigh and Jordan Swain; Brandon, Stacey, Meagan and Allison Smith; Morgan, Taylor, Madison and Tanner Smith; Grace and Jane Hansen; as well as five great grand-children. Doug is also survived by five of his six siblings, Glenn, Merlin, Clyde, Shirley, and Rhea, all of whom reside in Utah. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2002, at the Idaho Falls LDS Central Stake Center, 2025 Jennie Lee Drive. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the funeral, as well as from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5th at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 East Ammon Road. Burial will be in the Ammon Cemetery. Doug will be greatly missed. He was a good man. I will never forget him. Posted by Wynn Robison @ 01/28/2003 08:49 AM MST I enjoy many fond memories of Bishop Smith while growing up on 13th Street in the 11th Ward. He was "my" bishop and example to all. May you find comfort and peace in your faith.
