Douglas A. Sonnenberg, 80, of Ammon, Idaho, passed away on May 9, 2025, at Fairwinds-Sand Creek Retirement Community. He was under the care of his wife, Fairwinds staff, and Hospice of Eastern Idaho.
Doug was born July 8, 1944, in Wayne, Michigan, to Albert A. Sonnenberg and Louise A. Moon. In 1957, he and his family moved to Westminster, California, where he graduated from Westminster High School. He also attended Palomer College in California. He served in the United States Army from 1965 until 1967, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
On September 22, 1967, he married, Diana Koser, whom he met in high school and at church. They made their home in Westminster, California, where Doug worked at McDonnel/Douglas as a computer engineer for 8 ½ years, and then moved to Ammon, Idaho, where he worked at the Computer Center for the Idaho National Lab. He retired after 24 ½ years. He enjoyed golf, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, construction, and finishing our basements in two homes.
Doug is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diana; daughter, Dawn Garza of Texas; son, Sean Sonnenberg of Seattle; and daughter, Wendi Jacklitch (Jim) of Maryland; his brother, Bruce (Joni); and six wonderful grandchildren, Kylie, Andrew, Anthony, Lily, Jessica, and Kimberly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
A gathering for friends and family will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2025, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. Inurnment will follow in the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Blackfoot at 2:00 p.m.
