Dorothy “Dot” Arlene Smith Tyler, 98, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She was born March 25, 1926, to Allen Freeman Smith and Dorothy Jane Welker Smith, in the tiny town of Henrieville, Utah. Dot was the youngest of nine children. She had a happy childhood growing up in St. Anthony, Idaho.
After high school, she moved to San Diego (Chula Vista), California, with a friend. There she met and married a young Navy sailor by the name of Wilson “Bill” Richard Austin. The young couple were stationed in several places in the United States (Hawaii being their favorite), all while raising four rambunctious boys.
Later in life, Dot married Darwin Tyler and lived in Preston, Idaho. She loved his children and grandchildren as much as her own.
Dot was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities from Primary to Relief Society. She was adored by family, friends, and neighbors. Dot walked around with a big smile and a Diet Pepsi in hand. Once asked what she attributed to her longevity of life, she held up her Pepsi and said, "Oh, I don't know.” I believe she would have said, "Love and family, for that is where life begins and love never ends."
Dot is survived by her beloved boys, Bryon Dale (Joann) Austin, Richard Coye (Mary) Austin, Raymond Wade Austin, and Allen Lane (Ethel) Austin. She left a large legacy of love for her 19 grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all her brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Valley View Cemetery, 598 East Shoshone Street, Rockland, Idaho.
