Celebrating the Life of Dorothy Ann Nelson, July 30, 1933 - April 11, 2026.
Dorothy Anne Nelson, a woman defined by her unwavering faith, musical gift, and devotion to her family, passed away peacefully in Livonia, Michigan, on April 11, 2026. She was 92 years old.
Early Life and Education
Born on July 30, 1933, in the small community of Shelton, Idaho, Dorothy grew up with the values of hard work and a strong religious faith. She graduated from Rigby High School in a graduating class of just 26 students.
She went on to attend Utah State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics-a field that would utilized as a teacher, mother, and homemaker.
A Partnership of Faith and Labor
On March 9, 1956, Dorothy married the love of her life, Herbert Nelson, in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their early years were spent as "poor farmers," leasing land to grow potatoes, oats, hay, and wheat. These humble beginnings forged a resilience that Dorothy carried with her when the family moved to Detroit in 1966, eventually settling in Westland, Michigan, where she lived the rest of her life.
A Legacy of Music and Service
Dorothy was a woman of extraordinary talent and service. Her life was a symphony of dedication:
• Music: A gifted pianist, Dorothy shared her talent by teaching piano for over 40 years, touching the lives of hundreds of students. She served as a church accompanist for the majority of her life.
• Teaching: She shared her expertise in high school home economics classes, teaching others the art of creating a home.
• Faith: Alongside Herb, she served as a missionary for 1.5 years in Jackson, Mississippi, and dedicated many years of service to the Detroit Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Family and Remembrance
Dorothy was a devoted homemaker who ensured her family was always cared for. Above all her achievements, she was a steadfast spouse and a nurturing mother.
She is survived by:
