IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Dorothy Jenkin Kelly McCombie, 92, a resident of Fairwinds Sandcreek Idaho Falls, ID; Hale, MI and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, was reunited with her dear husband, Arthur, and her Heavenly Father May 30, 2010.
She was born February 28, 1918 in Ishpeming, Michigan, daughter of Alfred Ernest Kelly, an immigrant of The Isle of Man, and Ethel Mae (Jenkin) Kelly, also of Ishpeming. Dorothy was raised in Ishpeming and was a graduate of Ishpeming High School. She received a Bachelor of Education Degree in elementary education from Northern Michigan University and later a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
While at Northern, she met Arthur Earl McCombie and in 1941, the couple married at her home in Ishpeming on June 25, 1941. Dorothy began her teaching career in the Flint Public Schools where she taught at all grade levels, preferring the third grade. Art and Dorothy built a home in Flint where she assisted her husband in caring for their many fruit trees. Her teaching career spanned 30 years and she retired in 1977. In retirement, Dorothy and Arthur maintained two homes, the summer home in Hale, and the winter residence in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Dorothy was an excellent cook ~ her family favorites were traditional Cornish pasties and freshly picked huckleberry pie. She was extremely generous with her time, talents and resources and several of her grandchildren were recipients of her kindness during their college pursuits. Her birthday greetings and special packages were a treat and she never missed a birthday. A professional pianist, Dorothy often served as accompanist for her husband's solo work as a vocalist. She also served as organist for the Court Street Methodist Fellowship Class in Flint and gave piano lessons on Saturdays in her home.
Dorothy was a member of the University of Michigan alumni Association, the Eastern Star, Michigan Education Association, and a Lady Elk affiliated with the Flint Elks Lodge. She was recently baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include her sons, Dr. Douglas Arthur (Janet Ward) McCombie of Idaho Falls, ID and Bruce Earle (Janice Damoth) McCombie of Marquette; 8 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren who adored her, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her two brothers, Paul and William Kelly, twin grandsons, Stewart and Spencer McCombie and her husband of 68 years, Arthur Earl McCombie.
