Dorothy Mae Augustine Fife passed away on February 28, 2023, at the age of 94, in Washington, Utah, at the home of her daughter.
Dorothy was born May 31, 1928, in Rose Hill, Iowa, the first of four children born to LJ Augustine and Letha Elizabeth Kendall. She received her formal education in Mahaska County public schools and extensive life learning on the farm. Upon graduation, Dorothy moved to Des Moines, IA, to attend nursing school at Iowa Methodist Hospital. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1949. While working in the hospital nursery, Dorothy met Reed Fife, a pediatric resident from Idaho. Their first date was on January 1, 1950. They were married in Des Moines on June 29, 1950. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple August 1, 1952.
Dorothy traveled between Idaho, Iowa, and Florida as Reed served as captain in the U. S. Air Force from 1953-1955 . They settled in Idaho Falls and ran a busy pediatric practice there from 1955-1987. Across 50 years in Idaho Falls, Dorothy was involved in various civic activities throughout the county and worked as an RN at the old Riverview Hospital. She held multiple positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, in 1990, Dorothy and Reed served a humanitarian mission to Romania. Following Reed's death in 2005, Dorothy made her home in Washington City, UT.
Dorothy leaves a legacy of love of family, commitment to God, and support for lifelong education. For her 90th birthday, her progeny adorned her bedroom with pennants from the many colleges and universities that they attended. Dorothy saw to it that those in her sphere of influence felt loved, supported, and heard. She was most pleased with the 'good citizens' she raised. And, she continuously expressed gratitude to God for 'life itself' and for her good life that was filled with faith and hope. She loved vanilla ice cream, lambs, the color yellow, children, and her cats, Sadie & Ore, and her dogs, Tarey & Friskie. She was a master listener and sage.
Dorothy is survived by her five children, Robert Fife (Lynn) of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Richard (Laurel) Fife of Castaic, California; Randall (Lizette) Fife of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Raymond (Robin) Fife of Danville, California; Susanne (Rex) Wilkey of Washington, Utah; and her sister, Lucy Augustine Futrell of Ames, Iowa. Dorothy has numerous precious grandchildren and perfect great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant son, Dale Reed Fife, her brothers, Frank Augustine and Mike Augustine, and many beloved in-laws.
The family extends appreciation to the compassionate in-home services of Dixie Hospice, Home Helpers, and Amada Senior Care.
Under the direction of Wood Funeral Home, Dorothy will be buried in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls, next to Reed.
