Doris Sermon

Doris Sofie Christensen Sermon passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the age of 97. Those who knew Doris can attest to her larger-than-life character; a character formed by hard work, determination, adaptation, faith, and love. Doris was born July 21, 1918, to Fred and Lizzie Christensen. As the third of ten children, Doris learned to sew, cook, and tend her younger siblings when she was quite young herself. As was common at the time, Doris left school after the eighth grade and began working for relatives and neighbors as a domestic helper tending children, cooking for farm hands, and cleaning. Doris worked at Heise several summers and developed a close friendship with the Quinn family. Doris married Frank Bush Sermon on December 28, 1936, on Butler Island, near Ririe, Idaho. Together, they had four children. After Doris retired from the R.T. French Company, she and Frank became "snow birds" and enjoyed their yearly trips to Overton, Nevada. Doris was active in community theater programs there, and she and Frank danced together almost every Saturday night, something they both loved to do. Doris and Frank made their home in Shelley from 1971 until Frank’s passing in 2008. Doris stayed in their home for a few years where she continued to enjoy the lovely flower and vegetable gardens she and Frank had so lovingly cultivated over the years. A few years ago, Doris moved to Lincoln Court in Idaho Falls where she made new friends. Doris was an excellent cook and an accomplished quilter. She also loved to embroider and continued to give homemade embroidered gifts to loved ones long after her eyesight began to fail her. Doris also loved putting together scrapbooks and kept many photo albums. She had an excellent memory and had the best stories about everyone in those old pictures, people long gone, but dearly remembered. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; son, Fred Sermon; brothers, Archie, Jay, Gayland, and Newell Christensen; and sisters, Gladys, Julia, Eva, and Annie. She is survived by her sister, Wanda Larson; sons, Frank Steve (Bonnie) Sermon of WA; Harold (Susan) Sermon of Heise, ID; daughter, Beauty (Neil) Jardine of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter-in-law, Sheila Sermon of Idaho Falls, ID; ten grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren, and fourteen great-great grandchildren. Doris lived a full, wonderful life. We will all miss her stories, her kindness, and her laughter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue with Marv Eld officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
