Ruby Doris Woods Kennedy, 89, of Idaho Falls, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Bonaventure Assisted Living Center. She was under the care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice.
Doris was born September 28, 1922, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the daughter of Harry J. Woods and Daisy Bell Tipton Woods. She was the oldest of six children. After her mother passed away when Doris was only seven years old, she took on the role of care-giver, caring for her three brothers. Her father later married Ila Henry. Mr. and Mrs. Woods had two more sons that Doris helped raise.
Doris graduated from Central High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. She worked at Oakridge National Laboratory as a secretary.
While attending an August picnic in 1944, Doris met her husband of 66 years, Klem Kimbell Kennedy. The two were married the following May. In 1950, with their daughter, Karen Eileen, and their six-month old son, Keith Thomas, they moved to Idaho Falls for the first time with the opening of the Atomic Energy Commission. Throughout the next few years the family moved to various places within the United States because of Klem's career, but the two decided to return to Idaho Falls to raise their family. In 1955, Klem and Doris had their third child, Kevin Scott. The family had a happy home on 8th Street for years, which were always filled with Doris' home cooked meals, homemade cookies, and love.
Doris enjoyed and thrived on taking care of her family. She enjoyed sewing costumes, clothes, and costumes for her grandchildren and taught one granddaughter to sew, cook, bake, and how to play one of her favorite card games – Spite and Malice. She belonged to a long standing book club, the PEO, and a Bridge club. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling the country with her husband and friends in her suburban and travel trailer, as well as experiencing rich cultures of Europe. She was loved by everyone who knew her and was always willing to lend a helping hand in any way that she could.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Daisy and Harry Woods. She is survived by her children Eileen (Jim) Brewington, Keith (Margie) Kennedy, and Kevin (Emma) Kennedy; her five grandchildren, George Brewington, Monica (Patrick) Jordan, Nathan (Erin) Kennedy, Erin (John) Nazário, and Kira Kennedy; and four great-grandchildren, Aidan Jordan, Nina Amália Nazário, Nora Jordan, and Clara Gisele Nazário.
