Donald (Don) Eugene Combs passed away peacefully in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on September 26, 2016, at the age of 85.
Don was born on September 1, 1931, on the family farm near Sharon, North Dakota, to Lillian Estell (McCann) and James Henry Combs. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, following a four-year stint in the U. S. Navy. He married Tordis (Tordie) on Christmas Eve, 1953. The family moved to Idaho Falls in early 1960, where Don began working for the National Reactor Testing Station (now known as Idaho National Laboratory) as a Mechanical Engineer; during his 30 years there his positions included Technician, Supervisor, Project Engineer, and Manager of the Energy Management Department. He was honored with the Department of Energy's "Outstanding Employee of the Year" Award.
Don and Tordie had three children, with whom they shared their love of music, good humor, and all things Norwegian. His children remember him as a kind, gentle, patient, and generous father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Don was an accomplished welder and seemed able to make or repair almost anything; he was happiest when he was "covered with grease from head to toe." He acquired much of his mechanical skill while in the U.S. Navy, and was very proud of his military service. He was a dedicated individual who loved to help others and who was passionate about improving the lives of those around him. He was an active and dedicated member of the Sons of Norway for many years. Don and Tordie were well known in the region as volunteers for several Adopt-a-Highway litter control sections, which they maintained into their 80s. They were active church members as well.
Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Tordis (Stokkeland); children David (Idaho Falls, ID) and Allen (Hudson, NH); five grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and his brother Darrell (Citrus Heights, CA). He is preceded in death by his daughter Valerie, his parents, and siblings James, Robert, and Luella.
A memorial service and celebration of Don's life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on October 8, 2016, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 455 West Sunnyside Road, Idaho Falls, Idaho. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Don's life, and are encouraged to share an anecdote or memory during the reception. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, therapists and hospice people for their compassionate care and dedication.
