Click Here To View Memorial Video Donald Walter Cissel was born April 23, 1925, in Billings, Montana, the sixth and last child born to George Carlton Cissel and Barbara Miller Cissel. Don died January 3, 2014, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Don graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1943. Following high school he worked on the family’s truck garden farm until May 1944, when he enlisted in the Navy. He served in an amphibious craft unit during the Okinawa Campaign and later aboard the cruiser USS Los Angeles. After being discharged from the Navy in May 1946, he attended Montana State University with the financial help of the G.I. Bill. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in chemical engineering in May 1950. Don worked for Anaconda Copper Company in Anaconda, Montana, Westinghouse Electric at the NRF, and Argonne National Laboratory West at the EBR-I and EBR-II, starting in 1951. He retired from Argonne in 1990 as the ANL West Site Manager. While working at Westinghouse, he met and married Joann Coyte. To this union two children were born, Walter George Cissel in 1955 and Julia Ellen Cissel in 1960. Following Don’s retirement they divided their time between Idaho Falls and Nevada. This migration was halted in 2012 due to age issues. Don was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church. He served as a Deacon and an Elder. In his younger years he assisted in the upkeep and maintenance of the church. Don enjoyed the companionship of other Argonne contemporaries especially in the bi-weekly “Koffee Klatsch” session at McDonald’s. Donald is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joann Cissel of Idaho Falls, ID; Son, Walter (Muriel) Cissel of Eugene, OR; Daughter, Julia Cissel of Sandy, UT; Grandson, Calvin Cissel of Austin, TX; He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joseph Carlton (Margaret & Elizabeth) Cissel, George Emmett (Irene) Cissel, John Phillip (Esther) Cissel, James Vernon Cissel, and sister, Dorothy Pauline (Gene) Cissel Wholford. Don’s family wishes to express their appreciation for the excellent care and kindness given to Don by the staff of the Life Care Center and Hearts for Hospice. The family suggests donations be made in Don’s name to the Idaho Youth Ranch, 5465 West Irving Street, Boise, ID, 83706-9957, or the Idaho Falls Food Bank, P. O. Box 2236, Idaho Falls, ID 83403, or a charity of your choice. Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2013, at the Idaho Falls First Presbyterian Church, 325 Elm Street, with Reverend Doctor Dennis Falasco officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue, and from 1:00 to 1:45 Thursday prior to services at the church. Military Rites will be performed at the church following the service by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
