Douglas DeVere Hansen, 80, of Iona, left this mortal life surrounded by his loving family on January 19, 2013.
DeVere was born on July 19, 1932, to Douglas Hansen and Alta Pearl Peterson Hansen in Garfield, Idaho at his Grandma Peterson’s house. He was the first of four children. He grew up in Iona and graduated from Iona High School. He attended Utah State University and graduated with a degree in Welding Engineering. With that degree he worked for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, California, the George Marshall Space Center on the Gemini Space Program, the Alaskan Pipeline and finally at the INL in Idaho Falls from which he retired in 1995.
In 1952, he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was very proud of the sharp shooter medal he received during that time. He learned to cook in the Army and was in charge of many mess halls.
He met Karen D. Beebe in 1952 on Halloween on a blind date, tipping over outhouses. They were married on August 10, 1953. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple in July of 1963. They were blessed with 6 children, his greatest treasures.
DeVere was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a very strong testimony of the gospel. He and Karen served on 3 missions for the Church: Russia, Singapore and Australia. He served in many callings within the Church.
He liked to putter around in his shop working on wood projects. He loved to sit and listen to music. He received an IPod for Christmas and he could always be found sitting in his chair with his headphones on listening to old time country music. He especially loved to do honey-do jobs for Karen. She always had something for him to do.
DeVere is survived by his wife, Karen of Iona; and his children, Cynthia Jo (Ed) Caudle, Michelle (Tim) Sorensen, Evonne (Mike) Jaret, Kaleen (Barry) Scott, Aimee (Brad) Foster and Aaron (Leann) Hansen; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Quade (LeaRae) Hansen and a sister, Tonja (Norman) Ellis.
He was met by his parents and a sister, Tamara, as he entered his next assignment.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Iona LDS Ward Building (4707 East Iona Rd.) with Bishop Lynn Rockwood, of the Iona 5th Ward, officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church.
