Dean Arthur Tornkvist, age 43, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011, at his home after a year long battle with cancer.
Dean was born August 3, 1968, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to John Theodore Tornkvist and Lucille Jannette Anderson Tornkvist. He was the oldest of three children.
Dean graduated from Missouri Valley High School with the class of 1986. He continued his education at Eastern Idaho Technical College where he completed their Radiation Safety Program and earned his Journeyman Electrician’s License.
As a young man, he farmed with his father in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and later worked on a custom harvesting crew, traveling across the United States harvesting custom crops for farmers. After settling in Idaho Falls, he worked in the Radiation and Contamination Programs at the Idaho National Laboratories and Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project for the Department of Energy. In addition to his career at the Site he had his own electrical company, Osgood Electric.
Dean is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed spending his leisure time with his family, traveling, camping, shooting guns and sharing his talents helping others.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Gunderson Tornkvist; son, Taylor Tornkvist, step-son, Kasey Koplin, daughter, Kendra Tornkvist, and step-daughter, Kara Koplin, of Idaho Falls. His parents, John and Lucille Tornkvist, and a sister, Amy (Roger) Rodasky of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and a brother, Kevin (Danielle) Tornkvist of Omaha Nebraska.
Dean’s family wishes to thank the staff of Snake River Oncology and Creekside Hospice for their caring hearts and loving attention.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 8, 2011, at the Idaho Falls LDS West Stake Center, 2040 Brentwood Drive. The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue, and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church.
Burial will be in Annis-Little Butte Cemetery under the care of Wood Funeral Home.
