David Beckstrand Hunter, 82, of Idaho Falls, died May 29, 2016, at MorningStar Senior Living from incidences of dementia and age.
Born February 23, 1934, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Clarence Bingham and Rachel Cecelia Beckstrand Hunter, he was raised in Idaho Falls and attended Emerson Elementary, O.E. Bell Jr High School, and was part of the final graduating class of the old Idaho Falls High School in 1952. He also attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He served as an LDS missionary in the Western States and later served senior missions with his wife to London, England, and to LDS Business College. He was a member of the 145th Artillery of the Utah National Guard, and trained as a medic at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.
On May 6, 1960, he married Barbara Marie Hammon in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They lived in Shelley and Idaho Falls, where David began his career as an insurance agent for Snake River Mutual, initially in business with his father. He subsequently joined forces in 1966 with Hal R. Johnson and Lou Tremelling to build Falls Insurance Center on the corner of 9th and Holmes, a full-service independent insurance agency. In 1975, he was elected president of the Idaho Association of Mutual Insurance Agents. Following the death of his wife in 1993, he married Carolyn Goodson Wilding on December 10, 1993, in Idaho Falls. As he often said, he was "twice blessed" with wonderful spouses.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many Priesthood positions, including Stake Clerk, Scoutmaster, Bishop, Stake Presidency Counselor, High Priest Group Leader, Patriarch of the Ammon West Stake, and officiator at the Idaho Falls Temple. He also received the Boy Scouts of America "Silver Beaver" Award. He loved being outdoors and spending time with family and friends, playing practical jokes, singing old cowboy songs and playing games like chess. His passions were golf and fishing on his beloved Henry’s Lake.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn W. Hunter, of Idaho Falls; two sons, Clark D. Hunter of Idaho Falls and Jeffery (wife, Maegan) Hunter of Logan, UT, one daughter, Kathy Hartman of Knoxville, TN, and four stepdaughters, Wendy (Ken) Owen, Kerri (Brad) Bailey, and Chris (David) Taylor, all of Ammon, ID, and JoDee (Bryan) Cook of Fernley, NV; three siblings, L. "Chuck" Hunter of Burley, ID, Gloria Jones of Keizer, OR, and Ed (Marva) Hunter of Ammon, ID, 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara, his parents, a brother, Walter Hunter, and a sister, Mabel R. Hinckley.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at the Idaho Falls LDS 2nd Ward, 885 South Boulevard, with Bishop Nate Hunsaker of the Stonehaven Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, and from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park.
