David Leroy "Hoop" Harper, 77, of Idaho Falls, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. Dave was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on June 10, 1939, to Alfred Leroy Harper and June Poole Harper. He attended schools in Layton, Utah, and Idaho Falls, where he graduated from Idaho Falls High School. In 1959, Dave joined the US Navy where he became an Electronic Technician and was later medically discharged. He met and married Barbara Lou Hampton in 1961 and settled in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1972. They raised five children, Jennifer (Michael) Ramey of Idaho Falls, ID; Wade (Leslie) Harper of Idaho Falls, ID; Rodney (Heidi) Harper of Rigby, ID; Richard (Linda) Harper of Rigby, ID; and Adrean (Luke) Cavener of Meridian, ID. Dave was a carpenter by trade and built many custom homes in the Idaho Falls area where he won "Best Overall Home in Show" at the Parade of Homes in 1978. He later worked at the INL (TRA, CFA, and RWMC) as a carpenter for twenty years until he retired in 2005. Dave was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many church callings and as a temple worker. Dave served a two year mission with his beautiful wife at Martin’s Cove in the South Dakota Rapid City Mission and was also a Service Missionary at the Bishop’s Storehouse in Idaho Falls. He enjoyed working with wood where he designed and fabricated handmade fishing nets (HOOPNET). He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and spending time with family. However, probably his most beloved activity was riding/fixing snowmobiles with "The Gang." He is survived by his wife, his five children, twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and a brother, Brett (Leisa) Harper of Nampa, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Gary, Norman, and Lorin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2017, at the St. Leon LDS Ward, 6925 North 15th East, with Bishop Darin Berrett officiating. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side (963 South Ammon Road) and Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Fielding Cemetery.
