Daniel "Dan" Lee McAskill, 70, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. At the time of his passing, Dan was in treatment for two separate and unrelated cancers.
He was born October 26, 1946, in Bremerton, Washington, to Clarence William McAskill and Sylvia Christine Weber McAskill.
Dan immediately signed up for the Wyoming National Guard after his graduation from high school in Riverton, Wyoming. Shortly after that, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. On August 9, 1970, while on a military mission, Dan received severe injuries while under attack.
Although he never fully recovered from those injuries, that did not stop Dan from living his life under his terms. After retiring from the Army, he traveled throughout the United States. He visited family members in New York, Kentucky, Texas, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming and finally settled in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
He was an avid reader and enrolled in an array of courses that included gardening, psychology, social work and butchery. Dan graduated Meat Cutting School while in the Army at Fort Riley. Dan was a free spirit in mind and soul who at times, would venture off on a whim. He remained dedicated to his mother, family and friends.
Despite his injuries, Dan liked to be social and surrounded by friends. He would meet with his friends often at MarCellar's Vintage Wines and Brews, where he initially met the majority of them. There was hardly a person who would pass by his table without saying hello or pulling up a chair to visit with him. Of all of Dan's friends he had a special bond with Marcella and LeRoy, who were with him as he peacefully passed. He will be greatly missed by his circle of friends, but especially them.
A heartfelt thank you to Teton Cancer Institute where Dr. Todd, Dr. Adams and their incredible staff, gave Dan the best care possible.
A Celebration of Life will be held at MarCellar's Vintage Wines and Brews, 431 Park Avenue, on October 28, 2017, on what would have been Dan's 71st birthday weekend. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dan's name to the Idaho State Veterans Home, 1957 Alvin Ricken Drive, Pocatello, ID 83201. Dan was proud to have served his country.
