Picture this--Ammon Elementary School, Mrs. Birch's 5th grade class, math. Dale told me that if I didn't have homework, I could go to Colleen's with him that night to visit. I was a good student and knew math, but rather than chance not getting my work done and missing a chance to go see Colleen, I cheated from the kid next to me and was caught. That was the one and only time I cheated in my entire educational career. As I recall, I did get to go to Colleen's to visit.
It was fun to go to Colleen's because she did the most beautiful embroidery work--dish towels, pot holders, pillowcases--she had a cedar-chest full of these items when she and Dale were married. Watching her embroider intrigued me, and, to this day, have never been able to embroider the way Colleen could.
After the evening visit, Dale would start his car, put me in it, and go back inside to say goodnight to Colleen. Those were LONG, LONG good-byes!--seems like I waited in the car forever.
When Dale was in high school, he and his friends would work on the farm hauling hay and straw. I was barely old enough to keep the tractor and truck going between the rows of bales. When I got to the end of the row, I had to stop and Dale would come and make the turn, and on we would go. Occasionally I would hit a bale and the truck would stall--no worries--Dale would patiently back it up, set the steering wheel straight again, and on we went.
Dale, thanks for the memories! May God's gentle mercies be upon you and may you rest in peace.
