Our much-loved daughter and sister, Connie Lee Hobbs, died August 23, 2015, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, at her home of causes incident to health and age. She was 63 years old.
Connie was born at the LDS Hospital on Memorial Drive December 11, 1951, to Bill and Joy Hobbs. Connie was mentally handicapped and attended school at the Saint Leon School for handicapped children. She had a zest for life, which included a great love for her family and friends. She loved to sing, dance, and watch television, especially "The Lawrence Welk Show." Two of her favorite movies were "Lassie” and “Old Yeller." She knew all the words to many songs, including those found in several old time musicals including "Oklahoma,” and “The Sound of Music." She also had a love for primary songs. She would often sing them to her family and could be heard singing them in bed in the early morning and evening. Some of her favorite songs included primary songs such as "I am a Child of God," "Jesus Wants me for a Sunbeam," and "Choose the Right."
At an early age she developed a love for her pets especially her dogs, Rusty and Kristy, and her cat, Mittens. She would often make animal sounds and could mimic a cat's meow. Sometimes it was hard to tell if there was a real cat in the room. Later in life her family would often hear her "meow" and it would always make them laugh. Many of her siblings, nieces and nephews picked up the habit of meowing with her at family gatherings.
Even though Connie would never marry in this life, she repeatedly reminded her friends and family that she would be married in the next life to Jeff. She would even invite those who visited her to the wedding, and was obsessed with wedding rings, and the prospects of having an eternal companion herself. She wanted to be married in the temple and would constantly talk about it. Many friends and family members always knew what to get her for Christmas or her birthday, and a "ring" was one of her favorite gifts, which she kept "them all" in a box to show to her acquaintances. If she would lose a ring it would devastate her.
Those who knew her were drawn to her personality for she could remember names of almost anyone she met, even if it was a brief acquaintance. Oftentimes she would greet her family and friends by saying, "Are you going to buy me a Pepsi," or most recently, a "Mountain Dew?" Family members and friends would usually buy soda for her on holidays and especially on her birthday. Her siblings and friends would often sneak a soda pop to her. She loved that! One could become an instant friend at the mention of the word "pop."
Connie loved people, especially her teachers in the Special Needs Adult Program (SNAP). Throughout her life this program has blessed her as she participated with those who taught and loved her in this organization. It seemed that the highlight of the year for the family was to attend the SNAP Christmas program, where she participated and sometimes played the part of Mary, the mother of baby Jesus. Connie loved Jesus Christ and would always say that Jesus and Heavenly Father loved her, or "I will be married in Heaven someday." Her family knows that this is true. She taught us all how to love. She will be missed by her special needs friends and those who served as her teachers. Her family appreciates all of those who have loved and supported Connie in this wonderful primary organization.
Connie was preceded in death by her father, Bill Hobbs, and is survived by her mother, Joy Cotterell Hobbs. The family feels that:
God doesn't give special kids to special parents.
He takes ordinary, imperfect people, and gifts them with his greatest treasures.
And therein, he creates special parents.
Connie was blessed of goodly parents, but more than that, the family has been blessed by Connie's wonderful spirit. She is also survived by her brothers, Dan (wife, Tamara Saunders Hobbs), Steve (wife, Linda Cowley Hobbs), and Michael Hobbs (wife, Celestine Kupski Hobbs), and her sister, Julie Hatch (husband, Bradford Hatch).
The family expresses deep appreciation to all those who have helped with Connie and have taken care of her through the years; most recently, the hospice nurses, and Leah who has been one of her favorite caretakers. Thank you for the purses, which is another of Connie's favorite things, the makeup, which you lovingly adorned her with, and the love you have shown to her. We deeply appreciate and love you all.
