CHARLES DEAN HALLBERT
CHUBBUCK, ID -- Charles Dean Hallbert, 76, of Chubbuck, died May 31, 2002, at Bannock Regional Medical Center.
Born on January 25, 1926, to Mabel (Johnson) and Perry Franklin Hallbert in St. Anthony, Idaho, Charles was raised in the Salmon and Mackay area. His great love of farms, ranches, wilderness, outdoors, horses, and rodeo was from his upbringing in Idaho, where he learned the western codes of manhood and loyalty to his home.
He entered the Marine Corps June 20, 1944 to serve his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He fought for America on the Solomon Islands, Riyuku, and participated on the assault and capture of Okinawa, as well as serving in the honor guard at the raising of the flag at Okinawa. He was awarded the Purple Heart May 14, 1945 by his Island Commander for his injuries incurred at the base of Sugar Loaf Hill and was returned to Farragut, Idaho to recuperate until his discharge on May 29, 1946. A Japanese bullet from his injuries had lodged close to his heart and could not be removed surgically without further endangering his life. The bullet remained with him causing numerous bouts with pneumonia, as his body naturally worked the bullet closer to his lungs. In 1959, while residing in Harlowton, Montana, he coughed up the bullet on his way to work as a butcher. Many may recall hearing the news of the Idaho veteran's experience, as it was carried in the national news.
He married Silvia Jean McGuire on January 31, 1954 in Dillon, Montana. Charles and Silvia raised their four children in Montana, Alaska, and Pocatello, Idaho. He worked for J. R. Simplot company from 1973 until 1991 when he retired as an Operator.
Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Lou, seven years old, twin baby brothers, Franklin and Francis, twelve and ten days after their birth, respectively, his first daughter, born prematurely, living one day, Glenda Jean in 1954, both his parents, Franklin Perry in 1975 and Mabel Myrl 1983, his wife, Silvia, in 1987, his brother-in-law, Harry Edward Hampson in 1993, his son, Charles Haldor in 1995, and his brother Alvin Leonard Hallbert in 1997.
He is survived by his sisters, Shirley Diana and her husband, Joseph Barrett of Roy, Utah, and Delores Marlene Hampson of Pocatello, Idaho, and sister-in-law, Martha Hallbert of Vancouver, Washington, his children, Mark Jasman of Ennis/McAllister, Montana, Elizabeth Betsy Allen, of Pocatello, and Bruce Perry and his wife Misty June Hallbert, of Idaho Falls, and his grandchildren, Andrew Hallbert, currently stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii completing service to his country in communications for the submarine, LaJolla, and granddaughter, Dacia of Houston, Texas, and Tyson, Hannah, and Morgan, all of Idaho Falls, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles's life was filled with love for his family and close friends. He continued his love for the outdoors, horses, western music, and rodeo, and is listed in the Rodeo hall of fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as well as gardening, but his greatest treasures are his grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Ammon Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home on Saturday.
