Caryl was born February 24, 1933, in Riverside, New Jersey, to Ruth Catherine Ellzey and Clyde William Ellzey. She grew up and attended grade school in Pennsauken, New Jersey, and attended high school in Moorestown, New Jersey. After graduation, she worked for Dunn & Bradstreet in the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society (PSFS) building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Caryl was very musically inclined. While in high school, she began playing the organ for services in the Calvary Baptist Church in Pennsauken, New Jersey. She also played the violin. She was first chair in the high school orchestra and played the piano as well.

She met Cort A. Zimmerman in New Jersey and they were married on October 18, 1952, at the Calvary Baptist Church. To this union were born three children: Donald Craig (Christina) Zimmerman, born in Camden, New Jersey; Ellen Caryl (Lin) Bailey, born in Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Susan Lea (Steve) Birrer, born in Lake Charles, Louisianna.

Caryl played the organ for church services for thirty years, retiring in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She then became a quilter and enjoyed this activity for over thirty years. She loved gardening, music, and all needle arts.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Idaho Falls. She was a homemaker and did various other needle work projects. She served as President of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 56 for four years. She continued in the music field all these years, supported her husband, loved her children and grandchildren, and particularly enjoyed quilting with the members of the Patchworkers Quilting Club.

Caryl is survived by her children, Sue (Steve) Birrer, Ellen (Lin) Bailey, and Don (Chris) Zimmerman; grandchildren, Amber Butler, Eric Bailey, Alex Birrer, Ben Birrer, Matt Zimmerman, Craig Wilson, Todd Zimmerman, and Jeff Zimmerman.
