Carl Marcel Stoots, 57, of Idaho Falls, passed away September 23, 2018, while hiking climbing Diamond Peak in the Lemhi Mountain Range.
Carl was born May 30, 1961, in Washington, DC to Theodore Stoots and Jeanette Hertog Stoots. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1989 before moving to Idaho Falls. He worked was as a Directorate Fellow and Department Manager of the Nuclear Science & Technology, Thermal Sciences and Safety Analysis Department at the Idaho National Laboratory.
Carl was an internationally recognized researcher with over one hundred publications and four patents. He was awarded the INL Laboratory Director’s Award for Exceptional Engineering Achievement, the Federal Laboratory Consortium Outstanding Technology Department award and the Stoel Rives Innovation award for energy technology for his work in high-temperature co-electrolysis. When Carl was an Invited International Researcher at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics, University of Erlangen, Germany, he met his wife, Christa.
On January 21, 2002, Carl and Christa married in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Carl, Christa, and their twin daughters, Anja and Jessica, made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Carl enjoyed antique engines, astronomy, climbing, hiking, Jeeps, motorcycles, running, playing the guitar and, most of all, being with his wife and two beautiful daughters.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Christa Stoots of Idaho Falls, ID;
daughters, Anja Christa Stoots and Jessica Karla Stoots of Idaho Falls, ID; father, Theodore (Andria Harrison) Stoots of Maryland; sister, Monique (Timothy) Johnson and two nieces, Kristin and Maggie, of Maryland; in-laws, Dieter (Renate) Strempel and Christa (Karl Heinz) Gmeinwieser of Germany.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette Stoots.
Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1690 E. 17th Street, in Idaho Falls, on Monday, October 1, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will follow in the parish hall.
