Byron Ray Stommel, 83, of Idaho Falls, passed away October 20, 2025, at his home. He was under the care of his loving family and Alliance Hospice.
Byron was born January 9, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Robert Lloyd Stommel and Mildred Pauline Henderlider Stommel. He grew up and attended schools in Boise, Mountain Home, and Idaho Falls, graduating from Idaho Falls High School. He also attended ISU Police Academy and Pasadena City College. He also served in the military for a short time.
On November 19, 1965, he married Wanda Hendricks in Idaho Falls. They were later divorced.
On December 24, 1976, he married Sylvia Gale Bromley in Rigby, Idaho. Byron and Sylvia made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Byron worked in Law Enforcement for the City of Idaho Falls until retiring, and then as the elected Bonneville County Sheriff until his retirement.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, POST Academy Council, ID Sheriff Association, and Tri County Sheriffs. He enjoyed rock collecting, collecting pens, hunting, fishing, antique cars, gun collecting, tinkering on anything with a motor, being of service and helping everybody, talking with anybody–he had the gift of gab, and especially spending time with his family.
Byron is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Stommel of Idaho Falls; daughter, Karyn (David) Bradshaw of Rigby, ID; son, Kirk (Christine) Stommel of Shelley, ID; son, Kent (Mary) Stommel of Ammon, ID; daughter, Krista (Dan) Donaldson of Ammon, ID; daughter, Stormy O’Connor of Montgomery, IL; brother, Roger (Barbara) Stommel of Mapleton, UT; 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, LaKoda Stommel; great grandson, Kaiden Moser; and great granddaughters, Ema Kidman and Oaklee Beard.
