Boyd R. Shirts, 86, of Idaho Falls, passed away March 11, 2016, at his home after an illness due to cancer, surrounded by his family. He was under the care of Teton Home Health and Hospice.
Boyd was born August 28, 1929, in Union, Oregon, to Lesley James Shirts and Ruth Harward Shirts and was the 5th of six children. He grew up and attended schools in Payson, Utah, and Hailey, Idaho, and graduated from Hailey High School. Later, after the birth of his first three children, he attended Barber College in Boise, Idaho.
On August 14, 1947, he married Myrna Elaine Downard in the Salt Lake City, Utah, LDS Temple. To this union were born five sons, Larry, Owen, Dave, Kerry, and Jerel. Boyd and Myrna made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, since 1958, where Boyd worked as a barber.
Boyd has always been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wherever he has lived. He served as Counselor in two different Bishoprics, Ward Missionary Leader, Ward Clerk, Priesthood and Primary Teacher, High Priest Group Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Young Married Leader, Ward Chorister and many others.
With his wife, Myrna, he served a Stake Mission, a Chicago Temple Mission, and a Service Mission at the Idaho Falls LDS Temple Visitor Center. They also served together in the Idaho Falls Temple for many years as officiators. He sang with the Barbershop Chorus and Quartet. He enjoyed golf, painting, music, reading, traveling, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Boyd is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Myrna Shirts of Idaho Falls, ID;
son, Larry (Penney) Shirts of Provo, UT;
son, Owen (Jenni) Shirts of Idaho Falls, ID;
son, Kerry (Charlotte) Shirts of Idaho Falls, ID;
sister, Colleen (Lawrence) Coates of Rexburg, ID;
19 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lesley and Ruth Shirts, three brothers, Max, Orin, and Carl Shirts, a sister Lorna Shirts, and two sons Jerel Jon Shirts and David Boyd Shirts.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, March 19, 2016, at the Rose Park LDS Ward, 1165 Azalea Drive, with Bishop Graham Whipple officiating. The family will visit with friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Avenue, and from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Hailey Cemetery in Hailey, Idaho at 12 Noon on Monday, March 21, 2016.
