Click Here To View Memorial Video Betty Winder Russell, 85, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 29, 2013, at the home of her loving son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Kristine, in Idaho Falls. Born October 28, 1927, in Ammon, Idaho, to Nathaniel Winder and Mary Emma Croft Winder, Betty grew up various farms in the Ammon and Taylor areas, attending school in Ammon, Taylor, and Shelley, Idaho. While in school she loved to play basketball and played Forward on the Shelley team. Betty lived with her family on a small farm in Taylor, where they worked hard to survive the Depression and World War II. She grew up in a family of nine children and was taught the value of hard work and honesty. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Eldridge C. “Ed” Russell. When he went to war, it was the loneliest time of her life. He returned from the Navy on leave after two years and they were married February 27, 1945 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Ed went back to the war for a few months, then returned home to Betty. Ed & Betty lived in Roberts and Idaho Falls for many years. Betty was a homemaker and Ed worked in farming. They later moved to Dubois, Idaho and operated the Long Branch Store in Medicine Lodge and Ed worked for the County Road & Bridge. When they were not working, they were camping. Betty and Ed had two sons, Kenneth and Darrell. They loved their boys and taught them to love the outdoors, where they spent every free moment. Betty and Ed were not wealthy by the world's standards. They had few worldly treasures, but what they had, they shared with others. You could never go hungry with Betty's fried chicken and potato salad in front of you. Betty was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed working with and helping people; her hobbies were gardening, hunting, fishing, quilting and cooking for her family. She loved to cook pies and pancakes, and especially her famous chicken and noodles! She also loved to watch the many birds that visited her feeders and, true to her nature, made sure they also had plenty to eat.
