Berniece N. Lloyd, 95, of Idaho Falls, passed away November 13, 2010, at her home of causes incident to age. She was under the care of Aspen Home Health and Hospice.
Berniece was born October 29, 1915, in American Falls, Idaho, to Andrew George Draper and Nina Bell Stewart Draper. She was the youngest of six brothers and sisters until her brother Floyd was born four years later to make the Draper’s a total of eight offspring. Raised around dry farms, ranches and homesteads in the Aberdeen and Rock Creek area, are memories of attending one room schoolhouses on horseback in the middle of winter.
The brothers decided that at least one of the family should have other schooling, and Berniece became a licensed cosmetologist in 1934 after business and beauty schools in Salt Lake. She was employed in an Idaho Falls beauty shop for six years.
She married Fenton Lloyd on October 29, 1935, in Idaho Falls. Son Dennis was born in 1939 followed by son Michael in 1941.
During the war years Berniece trained as a Journeyman Arc Welder at the ship yard in Vallejo, California and gained a First Class Welder’s rating. Upon returning to Idaho Falls after the war, it was unheard of for a woman to work in the labor field, so she accepted work as a saleslady in ladies wear shops. She moved to Pocatello for three years and worked at Fargo’s. Upon returning to Idaho Falls, she worked at the Vagabon Dress Shop (part of the Outdoorsman). Berniece divorced Fenton after 20 years of marriage and attended night school while trying to raise two sons. She then worked as a secretary for the Intermountain Gas company and then was employed at the National Reactor Test Site at Argonne National Laboratory. After 21 years at Argonne, she retired to take care of her mother at home. (Her mother died November 21, 1983 at the age of 100 years and one month.)
Berniece remained active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a 25 year member. She organized a Laurette Chapter and kept busy doing remarkable handiwork, gardening, and maintaining her own home. She also kept busy being a grandmother to Michael’s son, Danny.
She is survived by:
Sons: Dennis and Michael;
Grandchildren, Alexandria, Daniel and
Great Grandchildren: Johna, Rachael and Jessie
Great Great Grandchildren: Wyatt and Marlie
Brother: Floyd
She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Vesta, Chauncy, Mildred, Jesse, Milo and Wesley; and daughter-in-law, Donna.
